Bamboo is possibly the most under-rated building material today. It is strong, lightweight, and if properly treated, long-lasting. Varieties range from fine 1 centimetre culms used for weaving through to forest giants anything up to 40 centimetres (16″) in diameter and 40 metres tall! It is the ultimate in sustainability as the plant does not die when a culm is cut. It is also a much more efficient user of carbon dioxide than trees. Add to that the fact that it is ‘drop dead gorgeous’ when used well and you have a very compelling argument for it’s use.
