An old railway house sitting on the edge of the Amsterdam and IJmuiden line.  On the other side of the house lies the Kennemerland National Park. Steel and concete on one side, verdant green on the other. The architect’s challenge… to tie the harshness of the railway to the softness of the park.

Railway ties…

The solution was to retain the existing home virtually intact and unchanged but to add to it using straight lines in Corten Steel™.  Two wings have been added with the original home now being sandwiched in the centre, effectively anchoring the house to the landscape.

A polished concrete floor runs throughout the entire home which, together with the exposing of the original brickwork creates a contiguous effect visually mixing old and new. Large areas of glass and opening sections further remove the boundaries between inside and out, old and new, railway and park.

An absolutely radical renovation that will not leave you without an opinion is The Cloud House…
