As the urban spread continues, increasing numbers of farms end up as semi-rural or urban subdivisions. Sometimes, the farm homes are saved, sometimes demolished so as not to detract from the McMansions about to grace the landscape. Usually, the outbuildings are demolished and end up either burnt or as land fill. Occasionally, the recyclers may see merit in reclaiming some of the timbers. Either way, the history is gone forever.
Enter a new breed of specialist builder… barn converters. They retain the basic structure and salvage everything they can. Then they rebuild the barn as a home full of living history – sometimes in the local area and sometimes many hundreds of kilometres distant. So next time you see an old barn and think to yourself, ‘Wouldn’t that make a great home’, you may just be seeing the future!
