All You Need to Know About Mulch

Scientists have discovered that our ancestors used stones to inhibit weed growth in their gardens as far back as 10,000 years ago. They’ve found traces of prehistoric gardens throughout the world in recent years.  They have observed a similar technique in all of them.

The word “mulch” first appears in the English vocabulary in the 1650s. The noun is probably a variation of the Middle English adjective molsh, which means “soft” or “moist.”

The First Line of Defense

Say the word mulch today and the experienced gardener will tell you that it’s the first line of defense for what may be a hot and dry summer. 

Of course, mulch is simply a layer of opaque material placed over the soil surface. That layer keeps the soil moist, keeps weeds at bay, and helps produce healthier plants that require less maintenance.

Organic and Inorganic Mulch

There are two basic types of mulch nowadays: organic and inorganic.

The most commonly used organic mulches include:

  • Bark, Shredded or Chipped;
  • Composted Manure;
  • Grass Clippings;
  • Newspapers;
  • Shredded Leaves; and
  • Straw.

Gardeners will also often use inorganic mulch, which includes:

  • Plastic;
  • Rubber;

•     Landscape Fabric; and

•     Gravel.

Organic vs Inorganic

Inorganic mulches can make flowers or landscape beds look very clean and appealing. When you apply thick layers or use them with plastic or fabric, they successfully suppress weeds.

While they can cost a lot at first, you rarely ever need to reapply or top off inorganic mulches. However, they do not add any nutrients to the soil or help retain moisture.

Most experts prefer organic mulch and for good reason. Organic mulches help nutrients reach plant roots. They also nurture beneficial bacteria, fungi, insects, and worms.

These beneficial soil organisms in turn help control many plant pests and keep out undesirable bacteria.

Organic mulches also provide insulation, keeping the soil a little warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

They reduce erosion, help the soil absorb more rain, and reduce soil-borne diseases caused by splashing rain or irrigation water.

By preventing rain from hitting the soil directly, organic mulches eliminate soil crusting. Roots also develop better under organic mulches.  The improved water retention encourages them to extend farther.

How Mulch Works in Soil Science

Understanding how mulch behaves in soil answers the question what is mulch in terms. It moderates water and temperature, fuels microbes, and shapes structure, which drives healthier roots and harvests.

Moisture: evaporation, infiltration, and storage

Mulch slows evaporation by shading the soil surface and breaking wind at ground level. Water lingers longer in the root zone, so you irrigate less often. Pore spaces stay open, which boosts infiltration during rain and reduces runoff that steals nutrients.

Temperature buffer for roots

A mulch layer blunts heat spikes by day and holds warmth overnight. Roots avoid stress from sharp swings, so enzymes keep working and feeder roots keep exploring. Spring soils warm more steadily, and winter soils lose heat more slowly.

Microbes, carbon cycle, and nitrogen

Mulch is food for fungi and bacteria. As they digest carbon, they build sticky byproducts that glue soil into crumbs. Temporary nitrogen tie-up can happen at the surface with fresh chips near seedlings, which is why gardeners ask what is mulch beyond “wood bits” and focus on timing.

Structure: aggregates, porosity, and compaction

Fungal threads stitch particles together and earthworms pull fragments downward. The result is stable aggregates with more pores for air and water. Better tilth resists crusting, so seedlings emerge cleanly and beds tolerate foot traffic without turning hardpan.

Oxygen and gas exchange

Healthy roots need oxygen. Mulch reduces surface sealing, so gases move in and out through connected pores. You get aerobic conditions that favor beneficial microbes while discouraging sour, low-oxygen zones that stall growth.

Chemistry: pH drift and salts

Most organic mulches nudge soils slightly acidic as they break down. That helps nutrient availability in many beds. Rinse manures and seaweed before use to limit salts, and keep mulch off stems to avoid localized burn and rot.

Weed suppression and light exclusion

A consistent blanket blocks light, which starves annual weeds. Fewer weeds means less root competition and less disturbance from hoeing. Depth matters. Two to three inches is typical for beds, four on paths where foot traffic keeps layers compact.

Irrigation under mulch: drip placement and auditing

Drip lines belong under the mulch so water reaches roots without flash evaporation. Run a short test and lift a hand-sized patch to confirm wetting patterns. Readers who still ask what is mulch learn it’s also a delivery system that makes irrigation precise.
