Instructions
Measure Your Space:
- Find the area’s width and length where the ceiling storage will be placed using the measuring tapes. Note the inner and outer dimensions (for the plywood platform and the frame respectively).
Cutting Materials:
- Cut the 2×4 lumber by the measured distances using the miter saw. Mark the necessary size for the plywood with a pencil then cut using a circular saw.
Assembling the Frame:
- Arrange the 2x4s to create the frame. To improve strength before putting them together with 3″ wood screws, use carpenter’s glue to the joints.
Creating Bottom Flanges:
- Support for the plywood platform will come from the bottom flanges. Using 2″ wood screws, horizontal attachment of the 2x4s across the frame’s bottom
Locating and Preparing Ceiling Joists:
- Your ceiling’s joists will be found with the stud finder. Clearly mark these points since you will be attaching the frame here.
Building Ceiling Storage Carriages:
- Construct separate carriages, which are essentially smaller frames, that will be fixed directly onto the ceiling joists for added support.
Mounting the Carriages:
- Attach each carriage to a ceiling joist using lag screws and washers, ensuring they are spaced properly and level.
Placing the Main Frame:
- Lift the main storage frame and position it on top of the mounted carriages. Ensure it is level before permanently attaching it using more lag screws.
Installing the Plywood Platform:
- Place the plywood sheet on the frame and secure it using 2″ wood screws. Make sure it sits flush with the frame.
Attaching Stop Strips:
- Along the edges of the plywood platform, glue and screw the pine stop strips to prevent the plastic totes from sliding off.
Final Adjustments and Safety Checks:
- Walk around the installed ceiling storage to inspect and ensure everything is secure. Maintain at least 2 feet of clearance from light fixtures, door springs, and openers to avoid interference or hazards.
Loading the Storage:
- Finally, organize your items into plastic totes and carefully place them on the new storage platform, distributing weight evenly.
