What are the materials needed to make a DIY garage ceiling storage?

You can choose between the sliding system and the conventional ceiling shelving unit. It all depends on what you’re planning to store. Consider how frequently you would need those items and how heavy they are.

  • 2×4 Lumber
  • 4×8′ sheet of 3/4″ Plywood
  • 1×2 x 8′ Pine Stop Strip
  • Carpenter’s Glue
  • 1/4″ x 3-1/2″ Lag Screws and Washers
  • 2″ Wood screws
  • 3″ Wood Screws
  • Plastic Totes

  • Measuring Tape
  • Hammer
  • Miter Saw
  • Cordless Drill
  • Circular Saw
  • Socket / Ratchet SEt
  • Stud Finder
  • Level
  • Drill Bit Set
  • Ladder

How to make a DIY garage ceiling storage?

  1. Determine the outside and inside measurements.
  2. Create the bottom flanges.
  3. Build the ceiling storage carriages
  4. Make sure to identify the ceiling joists
  5. Attach the carriages into the ceiling with screws
  6. Provide markings for the distance or space on where to place the carriages
  7. Check the fit of your celing storage
  8. Attach the stops to avoid your totes from sliding
  9. Make the most of the vacant spaces, just maintain atleast 2ft from the lighting fixtures, doors springs and openers.
