Pallet furniture is a chic DIY trend that anyone can get into over a weekend. Using the pallets as a starting point, you can create countless projects for the home.

You can stain, stack, paint, and finish them any way you want. It’s a cheap alternative to buying new furniture. Of course, the special bonus is that it will give your home more character.

Now, this is not your ordinary, everyday piece of pallet furniture! If you have access to a couple of single-use pallets and want a seriously comfortable swinging chair, this paracord-laced hanging chair is definitely the hanging pallet chair project for you.

Paracord Pallet Hanging Chair

This pallet hanging chair is a simple furniture item you can add to your outdoor area. It’s strong and solid but conforms to your body as well, making it very comfortable to sit on.

It’s also very easy to make! The only difficult part of this DIY project, as with any pallet project, is disassembling pallet slats. The rest of the process is as easy as tying a shoelace. 🙂

Do you need relaxing outdoor furniture for your backyard?

Building a Hanging Pallet Chair

Materials:

  • Pallet (quantity would depend on usable slats you can take from each pallet)
  • Paracord
  • Protective Mask and Gloves

Tools:

  • Drill
  • Saw
  • Lighter
  • Sawzall

Steps:

There are many different ways to take apart pallets to use the wood for something else. I have found that prying them apart causes a lot of damage to the wood and is a lot more work than is necessary.

So, my preferred method is to cut the pieces apart using a Sawzall. (If you want to know more about pallets and learn how to disassemble them properly, here’s a comprehensive article you can read.)

All you have to do is cut through the nails that are holding it together and you are good to go (with minimal damage to the wood). If you want you can pop the remaining parts of the nails out of the wood.

Just take the Sawzall and cut right between the piece you would like to save (the top piece) and the thick frame. Try to cut just the nails and not too much of the wood. Once you get the hang of it it will go fast.

Now here is where you need to decide how wide you would like your chair. I guess you should base the size on the hiney that will be sitting in it. With the pallet that I had, I was able to just cut the boards right down the middle (20″). Butt the size is up to you 🙂

The amount of board is also up to you. I ended up using 16 boards for my chair. (Warning: Make sure you look out for leftover bits of nails in the wood as you are cutting.)

Now what you want to do is take one of the boards and mark where you want to put the laces.
I put my laces 1/2″ in from the edge of the board and put them 2″ apart.

Depending on how you would like yours to look you can make the laces further apart or closer together. As long as they are in far enough from the edge so that the board does not break once it weights it.

Keep in mind also that if the laces are spaced further apart,  the boards will tend to pull away from each other more, making a gap where things might get pinched (fingers, “cheeks”, etc.)

Now that you have your holes marked you can start drilling. I used a drill press but a regular drill will work just fine. I started by drilling all the holes in my first board and then I used that board as a jig to do the rest.

You will want a drill bit that is a little bigger than your paracord so that the cord fits easily through the holes.

Now comes the fun part. Start by placing two of your boards next to one another. Now lace the paracord through them just as you would a pair of shoes. Once you reach the end cut the paracord, making sure you leave enough slack to tie a strong knot at the end.

Now you can pull the paracord out and use it to measure the rest of the pieces you will need. When you cut the rest make sure you leave a little room for error. It’s better to have too much than to have too little and have to start over.

Once you have cut your paracord to size it is a good idea to melt the ends so that it is easy to get the cord through the holes. Now you can start lacing boards together.

Things to watch as you’re lacing:

  • Make sure you are paying attention to what side of the board is up and what side is down so that you end up with all the good-looking sides facing up.
  • It looks best to have all the knots on the bottom.
  • Once you have finished a lace go back and pull each “X” to get the slack out

Now all you have to do is hang the chair from whatever structure you have available. I used some 2×4’s between the trees in my backyard (not the prettiest but it works).

Just drill a couple of holes in each of the four corners you would like to hang the chair from and thread the paracord through them. I put the front cords back on board from the end so that it would be more comfortable on the back of my legs.

For a somewhat laid-back chair attach the front and back cords further apart from each other with the back cords low, for more of an upright chair, like mine, put them closer together with the back cords high. The whole thing is completely adjustable to your liking, so tweak it till it’s comfortable for you.

Note: I used two strands of paracord per corner, which is strong enough to hold me, but you might want to braid more together for added strength.

See other people’s versions! Getting into the chair can be a little tricky (kind of like getting into a hammock) but once you do relax and enjoy it.

I think I would stain the boards next time, this would look nicer and make the paracord stand out more.

Choosing the Right Pallets for Your Hanging Chair

Building a hanging pallet chair is a satisfying do-it-yourself project that can accentuate your outdoor area. Still, the success of your project mostly rests on selecting appropriate pallets. Choosing premium, sturdy, secure pallets guarantees that your chair will be not only comfy but also long-lasting. This comprehensive information will assist you in deciding on the greatest hanging pallet chair.

Look for Safe Pallets: Heat-Treated vs. Chemically Treated

Choosing pallets should first concern your safety. Search the pallets always for marks. Look for the “HT” stamp, which indicates the wood was heat-treated to eradicate pests without resorting to dangerous chemicals. Steer clear of pallets labeled “MB,” which denotes treatment with the poisonous chemical methyl bromide. Should you encounter across pallets devoid of marks, it is advisable to avoid them as their source and treatment processes are unclear.

Inspect the Wood for Damage

Look closely over the wood for any damage before bringing a pallet home. Your hanging chair may become unstable from cracks, warping, and splinters, weakening its construction. Go for strong, whole pallets. For a robust and long-lasting chair, hardwood pallets, made from materials like oak or maple, are perfect. Although softwoods like pine have uses, they do not hold up as well under weight or extended use.

Ensure the Pallet is Clean and Free from Contaminants

Pallets are often used to transport various goods, so cleanliness is critical. Look for pallets that are free from stains, spills, grease, or strange odors. These could indicate exposure to chemicals or food products that might have seeped into the wood. Before using the pallets, give them a thorough cleaning. Sanding the wood is also essential to remove any rough spots, ensuring a smooth and safe finish for your project.

Choose the Right Size and Weight

The size of the pallet plays a significant role in the design of your chair. Larger pallets provide more wood for a wider, more spacious chair, while smaller ones are suitable for compact designs. Additionally, consider the weight of the pallet. Heavier pallets might offer better stability but can be harder to handle, especially if you need to suspend the chair. Strike a balance between size, weight, and ease of use to fit your project’s needs.

Prioritize Sustainability and Quality

Choosing pallets is not just about safety—it’s also about sustainability. Upcycling used pallets reduces waste and makes your project environmentally friendly. Seek out pallets in good condition that haven’t been excessively worn down by previous use. Supporting local businesses or recycling centers can help you find high-quality options while contributing to sustainable practices.

Taking the time to choose the right pallets will save you headaches later in the project. Safe, clean, and durable materials ensure your hanging chair is both functional and stylish. By selecting high-quality pallets, you’re setting the foundation for a comfortable and safe addition to your outdoor space. Invest in good materials upfront, and you’ll enjoy the fruits of your labor for years to come.

Creative Design Variations for Hanging Pallet Chairs

A hanging pallet chair is already a unique addition to any outdoor or indoor space, but you can make it even more special with creative design variations. From adding personal touches to choosing functional upgrades, these ideas will help you customize your pallet chair to reflect your style and meet your needs. Explore the following design options to elevate your project.

Add a Curved Backrest for Comfort

Straight-backed chairs are great, but a slight curve in the backrest can take your hanging pallet chair to the next level. You can achieve this by carefully shaping the slats or adjusting their positioning. A curved backrest not only provides extra comfort but also creates a more ergonomic design, making your chair perfect for long lounging sessions.

Include Armrests for Extra Support

If you’re looking to make your pallet chair more functional, consider adding armrests. Use leftover pallet wood or other sturdy materials to craft armrests that match the overall design. Armrests can provide additional support and comfort, especially if you plan to spend hours reading, relaxing, or sipping on your favorite drink.

Incorporate Cushions and Upholstery

Enhance the comfort and style of your hanging chair by adding cushions or upholstering the seat. Choose weather-resistant fabric for outdoor use or opt for plush, luxurious materials for indoor settings. Vibrant colors, bold patterns, or soft neutrals can help you achieve the exact look you want.

Use Colorful Paracord or Rope Patterns

Instead of sticking with plain paracord or rope, explore vibrant color combinations or creative lacing patterns. You can braid multiple colors together, create geometric designs, or opt for a gradient effect. These small details add a playful and eye-catching element to your hanging pallet chair.

Create a Swinging Daybed Design

For those who want a larger, more relaxing option, consider turning your pallet chair into a swinging daybed. Use wider pallets or join two together to create a flat surface large enough to lie down on. Add thick cushions and throw pillows for a cozy outdoor nap or reading spot.

Add a Canopy for Shade and Style

Take your hanging chair to the next level by attaching a canopy for shade. This is especially useful for outdoor setups where direct sunlight can be a problem. Use lightweight fabrics like canvas or outdoor mesh to create a stylish canopy that complements your chair’s design.

Incorporate Storage Features

If functionality is your goal, include storage options in your hanging chair. You can attach small shelves or pockets to the sides for holding books, drinks, or gardening tools. This adds convenience without compromising the aesthetic of your project.

Use Reclaimed Materials for a Rustic Look

Pair your pallet wood with other reclaimed materials like old pipes, metal brackets, or vintage textiles. This can give your hanging chair a rustic, farmhouse-inspired charm that stands out in any space. The mix of textures adds depth and character to your design.

Try an Indoor Hanging Pallet Chair

Hanging chairs aren’t just for the outdoors. Install one indoors to create a cozy reading nook or a fun addition to a child’s bedroom. Customize the finish to match your indoor decor, whether it’s modern, minimalist, or bohemian.

Customize the Shape

Think beyond the traditional square or rectangular seat design. Experiment with rounded or triangular shapes to create a unique hanging pallet chair that draws attention. Unusual shapes can add an artistic flair while still being functional.

With these creative design variations, you can transform a basic hanging pallet chair into a stunning piece that’s uniquely yours. Whether you prioritize comfort, functionality, or aesthetics, these ideas allow you to craft a chair that fits your style perfectly. Let your imagination guide your design, and enjoy the process of creating a chair that’s as beautiful as it is practical.

Weatherproofing Your Hanging Pallet Chair

Any outdoor area would benefit much from a hanging pallet chair, but environmental conditions can rapidly deteriorate it. Making your chair weatherproof guarantees it will remain aesthetically pleasing, robust, and practical for years to come. Your homemade craft will remain charming and comfortable even if it is shielded from rain, sun, and humidity using the correct methods.

Choosing the Right Wood Treatment

Treating the wood will help your pallet chair weatherproofing start. Shield the chair from moisture and stop decay with an outdoor wood sealer or waterproofing stain. Choose goods with UV protection as well to defend against sun damage, which can fade or split the wood. For best durability, apply many coats; be sure to give enough drying time between each one.

Sealing Exposed Edges

Water absorption especially targets exposed edges and cuts in the wood. Following the cutting and assembly of your pallet chair, apply a second layer of sealant or wood glue to these sections. This extra process stops water from entering the grain, strengthening the structure over time.

Selecting Weather-Resistant Materials

If you plan to leave your hanging pallet chair outdoors, choose weather-resistant materials for accessories like cushions or ropes. Look for cushions with water-repellent fabric covers and quick-drying foam interiors. For the suspension system, consider using marine-grade rope or high-quality paracord designed to withstand exposure to rain and sunlight.

Protecting Metal Components

If your hanging chair includes metal hardware such as bolts or brackets, it’s important to prevent rust and corrosion. Use galvanized or stainless-steel components, as they are more resistant to moisture. You can also apply a protective spray or rust-resistant paint to further shield the metal parts from the elements.

Installing a Protective Cover

Adding a protective cover to your hanging pallet chair can significantly extend its lifespan. A simple tarp or fitted chair cover can shield the wood and fabric from rain, dirt, and UV rays. For convenience, opt for a lightweight cover that’s easy to remove and store when the chair is in use.

Elevating the Chair to Avoid Ground Moisture

Ensure your chair is properly suspended to avoid contact with damp ground. This prevents the wood from absorbing moisture that could lead to rotting or warping. Regularly inspect the hanging structure to ensure it remains stable and secure despite weather conditions.

Maintaining and Reapplying Protection

Weatherproofing is not a one-time task. Regular maintenance is essential to keep your hanging pallet chair in top condition. Reapply wood sealant or stain as needed, particularly after prolonged exposure to heavy rain or intense sunlight. Inspect the chair for signs of wear, such as fraying ropes, faded finishes, or rusted hardware, and address any issues promptly.

By taking the time to weatherproof your hanging pallet chair, you’ll not only preserve its durability but also enhance its appearance and comfort. A well-maintained chair can be a focal point of your outdoor space, offering relaxation and style for years to come. With these simple steps, your DIY project will withstand the elements and remain a treasured addition to your home.

Conclusion

A hanging pallet chair is a versatile and stylish addition to any home, offering both comfort and a touch of creativity to your space. With proper planning, design, and weatherproofing, this DIY project can become a durable and eye-catching centerpiece for your outdoor or indoor area. Whether you prioritize aesthetics, functionality, or both, a well-crafted hanging pallet chair will provide relaxation and charm for years to come.
