Curl Curl Beach started modern life as a holiday destination for Sydney’s residents. Located 18 kilometres north of the city centre, the journey involved a ferry trip from Sydney’s Circular Quay to Manly and then overland to Curl Curl. The golden sands, pristine water, a very large lagoon and good surfing conditions were a great attraction. In fact, I can recall spending a fortnight there when I was about seven years old 🙂
Curl Curl Beach
Today, Curl Curl is just another dormitory suburb of Sydney, connected by good roads, bridges and public transport. But the beach, surf and lagoon remain a major attraction to both residents and visitors alike. Most of the original holiday cottages have long since been demolished and larger lots have been subdivided to make way for higher density. The home featured here has been built on one of these ‘calved’ lots:
“This Northern Beaches residence in Sydney was an exercise in material, time, and cost efficiency. A specific project brief included two bedrooms with built-in robes, bathroom/laundry, an open plan dining, kitchen, living space, and a deck.
A shared driveway, a services easement, and a compact site influenced the form of the building envelope and allowed the architects to maximise internal floor area without sacrificing external amenity. The sustainable home responds to changing climatic conditions through natural ventilation in all directions, two integral fish ponds and vegetation that cool the summer breeze; and large awnings and timber screening shade living areas whilst providing privacy.”
