Isla Mujeres – Mexico Owner designed and built

When art meets function, it sometimes has surprising results. The home shown here is the work of well known Mexican artist, Octavio Ocampo and his architect brother, Eduardo. It sits on a thin peninsula on Isla Mujeres, (The Island of Women), just 13 kilometres from one of Mexico’s most famous resort areas, Cancun. However, unlike Cancun, the island is laid back and peaceful.
The brothers built this two bedroom, home out of concrete and salvaged materials. The intent was to have an organic design that melded with the environment in which it resides. In nature, right angles are rare. Rather, shapes tend to be fluid and flowing. This is especially true in our sees and oceans. This home replicates and even imitates nature.
The home has 360 degree views of the Caribbean and is only a short distance from Cancun. There are no corners anywhere and it is estimated that some 4,000 shells are used to theme the home including being used as tapware. BTW – we apologise for the quality of some images.
