Tent House

New Zealand –  Chris Tate Architecture

Built area:    70.0 m2
Year built:    2016
Photographs: Simon Devitt, Jono Parker

Tent House is the architect’s personal studio-cum-weekend retreat. Its sharply-angled roof is a standout in the middle of a lush forest. It’s pretty much like going camping in the woods – only with more sophisticated accommodations.

The A-frame roofed structure belies a comfortable living area. Inside, monochromatic walls done in a stark white color make the space larger than it seems. Black accents give the house a contemporary vibe.

The absence of windows and doors is not a problem. A full-height glazing is more than enough to let the outdoors in.

Monochromatic interiors make the space larger than it actually is.

A single helical staircase lead from the ground floor living area to the bedroom. The Tent House is simple yet sophisticated; basic yet functional.

Notes from the Architect:

Chris wanted to capture the back-to-basics simplicity of a camping holiday when he designed his Tent House on Auckland’s Waiheke Island.

The ten-like structure of the house responds to those restrictions in a daring and dynamic way.  The sharply raking ridge-line and soaring soffit reference the tent experience in an architecturally elegant way.

Overall, the Tent House is an embodiment of the complex rendered simple and the modest rendered sublime.
