If any of you remember, I built a bridge and water feature in my front garden a few years ago, which was featured on the Owner Builder Network. This time, I’m tackling the backyard. I’m excited to add another beautiful and functional element to my home, and I’m sure my family and friends will enjoy it for years to come. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I started this project whilst still unable to do more than a couple of hours of work a day and if you know my story, you’ll understand why spending more hours working on this backyard physiotherapy project is a challenge in itself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depending on what I was doing (eg: digging post holes) for my backyard physiotherapy project, it sometimes took a couple of days for my body to recover before getting back out there again. So I started off with a plan to try and do at least an hour’s worth of work a day, just to keep the body moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This entire backyard physiotherapy project only cost me $2000.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I already had some of the materials I needed at home.\u00a0 Lucky for me, there\u2019s been a lot of construction work in my area, so various builders were happy for me to take whatever was left over from their building sites. They were going to throw it out anyway so my taking it saved them from the hassle of disposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only materials I needed to buy were the posts, beams and roof sheeting for the gazebo<\/a>, sand & cement for the paths, water drainage around the gazebo<\/a> area, topsoil, retractable clothesline, and a few other odd bits and pieces needed along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019d be surprised at the things you’d need towards the end of the backyard physiotherapy project job, things that were disposed of along the way.\u00a0I didn\u2019t throw anything away until the job was completely finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, as always, start off this backyard physiotherapy project with a run-down backyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weeds as far as the eye can see.\u00a0 This timber was taken from a building site nearby.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure what they were used for, but the builder was more than happy for me to take these.\u00a0 It\u2019s treated pine so it wasn\u2019t very strong on its own.\u00a0 I laminated 3 of these together to create a single beam.\u00a0 It was only going to be used for roofing over the BBQ area, so it was perfect for what I had in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1 Clean up time<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, some moving room.  Still looks like a mess, but we\u2019ll soon fix that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dirty area used to have an above-ground swimming pool, but that was sold off and the area was never really used properly.\u00a0 At one stage it was used as a veggie patch, but it still didn\u2019t get used properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can see where the pool used to be. \u00a0And in typical euro fashion, the rest of the yard was concreted (yuck). I have always hated ugly concrete everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I never understood that mentality.\u00a0 Life\/God\/Nature spends millions and millions of years creating beautiful, natural earth, and we end up tearing it down to lay concrete everywhere. And then spend a fortune on holidays that let us commune with nature. It makes no sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So…… adios concrete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of it was broken with a great big sledgehammer.\u00a0I could have rented\u00a0a jackhammer, instead, I used the sledgehammer as part of my physiotherapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The weight of the hammer, the concrete and the swinging motion did me some good.  Hurt like hell after an hour, but like they say: \u201cNo Pain, No Gain\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This little pathway was the only way between the front and the backyard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything you see in this physiotherapy project was carried through this little passageway either by trolley or by hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had this little storage room behind the garage which was never really finished properly.\u00a0 That ugly blue board wasn\u2019t very appealing, so I called my cousin who builds colour bond fencing to bring me a torn-down hardwood fence.\u00a0It would save him the tip fees and I get free wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a win-win for both of us.\u00a0 I saved all the Redgum posts (to be used at a later stage of the physiotherapy project) and used the pailing to dress the storage room. Now it made it look like an old cabin in a forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2 Merbau decking<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of it was being thrown out on another building site and I only needed to buy 5 pieces to finish it off.  As you can see, the railing from the first photo was also used as framing for the deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because this stuff was hardwood, I only needed to laminate 2 of these together to create a single beam.  I just put more posts (the old Redgum posts from the fence) on each railing…. so 30 people can do the Zorba dance on this deck and it will hold up nicely. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3 BBQ Area<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, it’s time to lay down some foundation for the BBQ.  I used some old rusted zinc roof sheets (found on another building site) and stood them up against the back fence. These gave the area a really nice rustic feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The BBQ area is being built.\u00a0 While gas BBQ\u2019s are nice and easy to use, there is something to be said about wood and coal fire that enhances the flavour or anything you decide to cook on it.\u00a0So I bought an actual BBQ and built this area around it.\u00a0Storage for firewood under it, a sink for rinsing out platters and plates (or to throw ice and drinks into)…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 4 Cobbled Stone Path<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve been following the Owner Builder network for a while now and saw this cobbled stone path maker that I thought was really just amazing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, I couldn\u2019t find a design that I liked that was available in Australia. \u00a0I fished around on the internet and found a design that I liked in the USA. \u00a0I mixed the concrete in a wheelbarrow and added the black concrete colour powder to the mix.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mixing all that concrete wreaked havoc on my back. \u00a0It took me a full day to make 4 stencils and then took a day for recovery.\u00a0 What you see in this photo took me a day and a half of work.\u00a0 But I was too dumb to quit…. so onwards I pushed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Quick test.  Black stones with white sand through it all….  not a bad look at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I made a few extra pieces with whatever concrete was left in the wheelbarrow after a day’s work and ended up using these on the corners and ends where a full stencil wouldn\u2019t fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 5 Gazebo<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now on to the floor of the gazebo. I decided to make the gazebo first and then have the rest of the path come up to the gazebo area.  That way, at first glance it would seem like it was all one path, but would subtly stand out as two separate areas (which you\u2019ll end up seeing at the end).  You can also see where the spare pieces would eventually come to be used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Put some water drainage around the outside so that the rain can fall into it and escape rather than sit in the yard and just flood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All that concrete mixing was eventually destroying my back.  It was doing more harm than good so we came up with a different idea.  I went out to Bunnings and bought a paint mixer to fit on an electric drill.  Sand, Cement & Water in that black tub and used the drill to mix it.  I used a paint mixer rather than a glue\/concrete mixer because of the design of these things.  The concrete mixer had more of a spiral which added too much strain on the drill whereas the paint mixer worked perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would end up going through 3 paint mixers by the time I finished. But at $12.50 each, the savings on my back and on the electric drill was well worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The backyard physiotherapy project is slowly taking its place<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Post time.  1 day, 2 post holes.  This ground was torture to dig up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good old clay that had to be dug out by pick.  Not very fun, but a necessity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, I got to put the beams up.\u00a0 At this point, you might be wondering why is there a post in the middle of nowhere. \u00a0Just wait for it..wait for it…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All beams are up.\u00a0 As you can see, I\u2019ve been collecting bits and pieces from building sites around my area.\u00a0 Top and bottom cover sheets from a roofing that were scratched and couldn\u2019t be used on the job were thrown out by builders.\u00a0 Their trash, my treasure.\u00a0 The whole theme of the backyard physiotherapy project was a forest cabin \/ rustic look, so these were perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 6 Topsoil time<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t want to go for Buffalo grass because I\u2019m not a fan of those runners.  I went for seeds instead.  It\u2019s a little more work involved but it does give a nicer feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember all that concrete at the beginning?  I decided to put some of it to good use and made these feature rocks with Oxide Colouring.  Just mix some colour with the water before you mix the water with your concrete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It took a lot of trial and error before getting the right colour.\u00a0 That red is a mixture of about 5 parts Red, 1 part Black, and 2 parts Yellow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There may have been some tinkering along the way, so don\u2019t ask me for the exact mixture.  I mixed the colour in a single glass of water and only made a small concrete mix.  Using rubber gloves, I slapped and spread the coloured concrete over the old one till it was evenly spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I used a paintbrush to texture it.\u00a0 Once it was dry, I used a concrete sealer over the top for it, to keep its colour during the winter rains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 7 Flower Beds and Fencing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now that the roof of the part of my backyard physiotherapy project was up, I could really get to work.\u00a0 The space between the gazebo and the fence looked ugly so I came up with the idea to make flower boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making the frame.\u00a0 Remember that old fence I mentioned earlier?\u00a0 Part of the pailing was used for the storage room\/cabin, the rest I put aside.\u00a0 What I had left wasn\u2019t enough, so I put in another phone call to my cousin to ask for another hardwood fence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But all he was removing was treated pine for the next 2 months. So I looked through the local paper for other fence builders and found someone who had a hardwood fence coming down in a week’s time.\u00a0 He would drop it off for free on the condition that I took the whole lot.\u00a0 DONE. Redgum posts and all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Come rain, hail or shine, the roof was up so the work continued underneath. All the wood from the fence I couldn\u2019t use on the job was used in a fire pit right next to me (an old BBQ that was rusted and had holes in it…. but worked well to light a small fire to keep me warm).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now that didn\u2019t come out too bad.  Actually, it came out better than I thought it would.  I made some compartments for bits and pieces that we might need when hosting a party, or for the backyard.  I eventually put the places in another container with a towel over the top to keep them clean from dust when not hosting a party.  Another compartment for alcohol and drinks and then glassware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it\u2019s all closed up, everything is concealed. I filled the top with pots & pots of orchids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But we still had an ugly space between the path and the fence, so I made a few walls of bricks and voil\u00e0, flower boxes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was going to use some pebble stones here but then I saw these black and blue play mats from Bunnings and loved them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, wondering what this area is for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you can\u2019t drill through a beam, the only option you have is to go around it.  I had some steel laying around at home, so I went and bought 2 hanging hinges and these things made up.  A local welder only charged me $100 to bend and weld these brackets for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 8 Swing Area<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

See it now?\u00a0 A nice swing area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That swing was originally a bench chair at a restaurant that had a broken leg.\u00a0 The owners were going to throw it out, so I brought it home, removed the legs completely, made a frame around it, reinforced the underside (especially the ends), 4 hooks, and chain, and I had myself an adult-sized swing (or a swing for 2 kids)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My niece christened the swing with the first ride.  She\u2019s a happy little vegemite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not looking too shabby, considering what I first started with.\u00a0 The grass is growing slowly, slowly.\u00a0 Flower boxes are done. The Garden beds are done.\u00a0 The lemon tree has been pruned and trimmed.\u00a0 Feature concrete bench under the tree. \u00a0You can also see where the pathways stop and the gazebo flooring starts.\u00a0 Those spare pieces I had came in handy.\u00a0 I actually had to make a few more by the time it was all finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 9 Table Setting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had an outdoor table setting already, so brought it to the back and put it under the gazebo.  Fits perfectly, but didn\u2019t look quite right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Glass and steel in a predominantly wood-themed backyard?\u00a0 I think not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Either I go out and spend $8000 on a new outdoor table setting, or do what I did…which was to make one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember that Redgum I was saving up? I had a few Redgum sleepers from Bunnings, left in the garage for 8 months to completely air dry. I used the old Redgum posts to make the legs and I got myself an outdoor table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The table setting project isn\u2019t completely finished yet, so I will post that project once it\u2019s done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I made 2 benches already which I am actually selling online at the moment.\u00a0 I made the benches first before the table and used a different design on the benches.\u00a0 I am going to make 4 more benches for the table with a horse’s head engraved into the sides rather than the crest design which is why I am selling these 2 already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only thing left at the time of this writing is to put up the retractable clothesline and put the final touches on the BBQ. \u00a0I will add those photos once they are finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 years of what I would use as my physiotherapy is now complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My catchphrase: \u201cI\u2019m too dumb to quit\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can now say that by the end of it, I\u2019ve finally got the strength in my body back to what it used to be pre-accident.\u00a0 What started out as only 1-hour physical work a day is now up to about 6.\u00a0 It\u2019s not perfect but at least I can now maintain that without all the pain in my back, hip and leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I pushed through even when I was told to slow down and relax.  Quitting was never an option.  No matter how hard life knocks you down, just remember that 1 step forward is still progress, even when it\u2019s followed by 3 steps back.  Look at my end result as proof of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No matter if it\u2019s a physical, emotional or mental disability, give yourself a big project and measure your progress according to that project.  Even if you only do 30 minutes of work a day\/night on it, it is still progress.  Never quit and never give up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My next project is to revisit my original one.\u00a0 After 5 years, the front yard isn\u2019t quite what I hoped it would be.\u00a0 The water feature isn\u2019t working properly because of the build-up of sludge on the bottom of the pond, so I’ll have to install a filter somewhere in there.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is too much still water in the pond so it\u2019s become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.\u00a0 Palm leaves kept falling into the pond and being sucked up into the water pump and clogging that up as well. So I drew up some new modified plans to correct some of these problems and will begin working on that after the New Year…..so stay tuned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the author<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

OBN Member, Con Trelos, was in a major motorcycle accident in March 2010.\u00a0 A truck cut him off on a roundabout.\u00a0 He hit the driver\u2019s side door and landed on the road.\u00a0 Instead of the truck driver stops, he attempted to run over the top of Con to try and escape.\u00a0 Con ended up with the front driver\u2019s side tyre on his hip, pinning it down and being dragged along the road. \u00a0Then the driver stopped, reversed, and tried going over the top of him again!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was conscious throughout the whole ordeal and did his best to stay alive.  He was dragged for more than 20 metres as the truck driver tried to escape.  Luckily other drivers finally caught up to the roundabout and the truck driver decided to abandon his escape plans but with him still pinned under the wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He spent a lot of time in rehab and had to learn how to stand up and walk again.\u00a0\u00a0He constantly pushed the limits of what he was able to do and tried to stay active and productive by fixing up the house bit by bit until there was nothing left to do except the front garden. That was 5 years ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Con thought it would be a great idea to not only fix the front garden, but the outside labour would further help get the muscles moving and build up my strength again.
