DIY Tardis Bookshelf: Fun Decoration in 8 Steps

DIY TARDIS Bookshelf
A tardis by any other name…

Here’s a project for those of you who are fans of Dr. Who. Organize your books or collection by building a TARDIS bookshelf storage system!

What is a Tardis?

A TARDIS (pronounced tar-DIS) is a British slang term for “a big, black, often box-shaped, police box-like vehicle used in popular fiction”. In popular fiction, a TARDIS is a time machine that, from the outside, appears to be a large blue police box. The BBC’s official definition closely matches the popular usage, which originated in Doctor Who.

If you have a wide collection of books, you may look for a unique way to organize them. There are many different ways to organize books, and the best way for you depends on your preferences.

Some people organize their books by genre, while others organize them by author or title. Many people like to organize their books by color, which can be a great way to add a bit of visual interest to your shelves.

Creating a DIY Tardis bookshelf is one of the best ideas. A DIY TARDIS bookshelf is a unique piece of furniture and an awesome decorative addition to your room — a great conversation starter!

This TARDIS can serve as a bookshelf or as a storage place for your valuable collections. You may want to consider installing shelves inside your TARDIS bookshelf to help organize your things.

This will make it easier for you to find what you’re looking for and will help keep your belongings more secure.

If you have particularly valuable items, you may want to consider installing a lock on the TARDIS door. You can also add a little extra flair to your Tardis bookshelf, consider adding a built-in speaker.

This would allow you to play music or audiobooks directly from the shelf, adding a whole new level of functionality and convenience. Plus, it would simply look cool to have a speaker built into your shelf.

If I were to build a Tardis bookshelf, I would also put some daylight white LED strip lighting to help me find what I’m looking for. (And to make it even more impressive, of course.)

One advantage of daylight white LED strip lighting is that it can help highlight objects within an illuminated area, making them more noticeable. Another advantage of LED strip lighting is that it is easy to install; simply cut your desired length, strip, and mount.

There are many different ways to achieve this look, so be sure to do some research to find the best option for you. How about you — what would you change or add to this project?

Advanced Customization Techniques

For those looking to take their TARDIS bookshelf to the next level, advanced customization techniques can transform a simple DIY project into a standout piece of functional art. Whether you’re a seasoned craftsman or a dedicated Doctor Who fan with a flair for creativity, these enhancements will add depth, functionality, and authenticity to your TARDIS bookshelf.

Below, explore a range of advanced customization options to truly make your TARDIS bookshelf a unique tribute to the iconic time machine.

Weathering Techniques for an Authentic Look

Achieving the weathered look of the TARDIS, as seen in Doctor Who, can add realism and character to your bookshelf. Apply a base coat in the lighter shade using a mix of dark and light blue oil paints. Once dry, lightly sponge on the darker shade in areas where natural wear and tear would occur, such as corners and edges. For more pronounced aging effects, gently sand certain areas after painting to reveal the wood beneath, simulating years of time travel and adventure.

Faux Window and Sign Light Panels

Consider installing frosted acrylic panels backlit with LED lights to mimic the TARDIS’s glowing windows and signs. Cut the acrylic to size for each window and the “Police Public Call Box” sign, securing them in place with a strong adhesive or small screws. Install LED strips behind these panels, connecting them to the same power source as your other electronic components. This lighting effect can bring your TARDIS bookshelf to life, especially in dimmer lighting conditions.

Sound Effects Integration

For the ultimate fan experience, integrating sound effects can make your TARDIS bookshelf feel ready to depart immediately. Use the MP3 module to load sound clips of the TARDIS materializing and dematerializing. Connect a motion sensor or a discreetly placed button to trigger these sounds, enchanting and surprising guests as they browse your collection.

Interactive Components

Adding interactive elements can turn your TARDIS bookshelf into an engaging piece of home decor. Consider installing a hidden compartment that opens with a secret switch or a book that, when pulled, reveals a hidden drawer. These elements pay homage to the Doctor’s clever and mysterious nature and add fun and functionality to your bookshelf.

Detailed Interior Design

The interior of your TARDIS bookshelf can be just as important as the exterior. Decorate the inside with wallpaper that resembles the control room of the TARDIS or use paint and decals to create a similar effect. Adding shelves in a circular pattern can mimic the look of the TARDIS’s interior architecture, making the inside of your bookshelf a place for exploration and discovery.

By employing these advanced customization techniques, you can elevate your TARDIS bookshelf from a simple storage solution to a remarkable piece of art that captures the imagination and spirit of Doctor Who. Whether you focus on aesthetic details, interactive features, or both, your TARDIS bookshelf will surely be a cherished creation for years to come.

Companion Pieces to the TARDIS Bookshelf

Creating a TARDIS bookshelf is a fantastic way to celebrate your love for Doctor Who, but why stop there? Complementing your bookshelf with thematic companion pieces can elevate your space, creating a cohesive and immersive environment that truly captures the essence of the series.

Here are several ideas for companion pieces that can accompany your TARDIS bookshelf, each enhancing the theme and adding to your room’s overall aesthetic.

Dalek-Inspired Side Table

Gallifreyan Wall Art

Incorporate Gallifreyan script into your decor with custom wall art. Whether you create a painting or a digital print, incorporating the circular Gallifreyan language can add a mysterious and artistic touch to your space. Place it above or beside your TARDIS bookshelf for a visually stunning effect.

Sonic Screwdriver Collection Display

Design a display case for your collection of Sonic Screwdrivers. This can be a simple shelf with custom holders for each screwdriver or a more elaborate case with lighting to showcase the intricate details of each piece. Position it near your TARDIS bookshelf to celebrate the Doctor’s most trusted tool.

Doctor Who Themed Accent Lighting

Craft accent lighting using shades or bulbs that mimic the interior of the TARDIS or the warm glow of Gallifrey’s sky. You can also create silhouette lamps featuring the profiles of various Doctors or famous villains. Such lighting can enhance the ambiance around your TARDIS bookshelf, creating a cozy reading nook or display area.

Customized Coasters with Doctor Who Motifs

Create a set of coasters featuring symbols, quotes, or images from Doctor Who. These can be made from wood, resin, or any suitable material that complements your decor. Use them on tables around your TARDIS bookshelf to protect surfaces while adding small, thematic touches to your space.

Timey-Wimey Clock

Design a clock that plays with the concept of time, inspired by the Doctor’s adventures. You can alter a regular clock by adding Gallifreyan numerals or images of the TARDIS and other time-related symbols. This functional decor piece can remind you that in the world of Doctor Who, time is not a straight line.

Space-Themed Rug or Throw

Introduce a space-themed rug or throw in the area around your TARDIS bookshelf. Choose designs that resemble the starry night sky, a galaxy, or even the surface of an alien planet. This can ground your space-themed decor, adding comfort and depth to the room.

Character Figurines and Statues

Display figurines or statues of your favourite characters or monsters from Doctor Who. Arrange them on or around your TARDIS bookshelf to bring the characters into your space. This adds personalization and turns your bookshelf into a centrepiece for your Doctor Who collection.

Incorporating these companion pieces into your decor can transform your space into a haven for Doctor Who fans. Each piece adds to the narrative, creating a room that pays homage to the series, stimulates the imagination, and brings joy to everyday life.
